How to Install Sump Pumps

You may need a sump-pump if you live near an area that receives frequent rains. These systems are intended to prevent water from damaging your foundation or basement.

They have a pit, a pump and water discharge pipes that let the water go outside. They require a check valve to prevent water from entering the pit during inactivity of the pump.

Pump

A sump pumps are essential for flooding problems or basement flooding. There are many different types of pumps, so it is important to select the right one.

Locate the lowest area in your basement that is not sloped down and away from your foundation. This location should be near an external wall, so it is easier to install discharge pipes.

Next, choose the pipe that will serve as the discharge for the sump pumps. If your local codes allow, this pipe will drain water from the above-grade pit into your home or into a nearby drainage system.

Once the discharge tube is completed, glue one end of the male adapter with primer and PVC concrete. Then, screw the pipe to the sump pump.

Check Valve

The sump pump's control valve prevents water returning to the pit from shutting off. This prevents backflow. It also helps ensure your basement doesn’t become contaminated with the pump’s used water.

It is simple to install the check-valve, but it will take some effort on your part. You will need to cut the PVC pipe to lengthen the fitting.

Next, sand the pipe ends until they are smooth. If you have purchased a coupler type, then slide the PVC couplings onto each pipe end and position them so they connect to both the top and bottom of the check-valve.

Hand-tighten the couplers once they are in place using a hose clamp. This will ensure that everything fits snugly. You can risk leaking and cracking if you don't tighten the couplings.

Discharge Pipe

Sump pumps drain basement water automatically. These pumps are installed in a sump pit, or basin, at the lowest place on a basement floor. This is where water naturally collects in heavy rains.

The pump's floating valve is able to move up and down. This allows the pump to activate when water levels are high and then shuts off when they drop. It's important to test it in order to make sure it does the job correctly.

You will need to install a drainage pipe after installing a sump-pump. This will direct the water from that pit away from your home's foundation. This pipe can be connected from your sump tank to a garden drainage point outside your home or to an underground sump pit drain.

To get the best results, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when routing your drain pipe. You should hire a licensed plumber for complex pipe routing or landscaping requirements.

Backup System

Sump pump backup batteries provide a backup system in the unlikely event that your primary pump is damaged. These systems are composed of a 12-volt large battery and a pump with a slightly higher capacity that the primary pump.

A battery backup system makes a great addition for any basement or crawl space. They can be used to protect your home in the event of power outages, which could cause your primary sump pump to stop working.

To install a backup system, there are only a few steps. First, connect the PVC drain pipe to both the primary sump pump discharge pipe and existing sump fittings. Next, attach a backup sump pump to the PVC drain pipe.
