What is MIP in Plumbing?
It can be confusing to use the many acronyms that are used in the industry of plumbing. Some are used to distinguish between different types pipe threads. Other are more specific. MIP stands, for Male Iron Tube and FIP stands, for Female Iron Pot. The piping systems in homes and other structures use both of these types of fittings. Each has its own benefits, but neither is interchangeable.
The materials used in MIP and FIP fittings include steel or copper. The fittings are threaded and screwed into another pipe. These threaded tubes are typically used for heavy-duty piping in high-pressure systems and pipes that transport dangerous substances like natural gases. These pipe threads have a thicker wall thickness than other types, which allows them to better withstand pressure. It is also much easier to disassemble them, which is great for when you want to upgrade or make repairs.
Some people may know that FIP and MIP refer to male and female pipe but not that they can also be used as a type thread. The threads that are used in these applications are called NPT or National Pipe Thread. You should know the meaning of these terms so that you can use the right fittings on your piping.
The main differences between MIPs and FIPs is that MIPs have threads in the pipe itself, while FIPs have them on the outside. These threads can be combined, but other pipe threads are not compatible. For watertightness, the MIP or FPT fittings will be wrapped in teflon and sealed with pipedope.
In addition to different types of threads and sizes, these fittings are available in different sizes. Some are large and have thick threads while others are thinner, designed for low-pressure application.
When selecting the right size MIP or FIP, it is vital to consider the maximum allowed operating pressure (MAOP). This is the maximum allowed operating pressure of the piping under steady-state conditions. It should not be exceeded. Infrequent, but high pressures, like surges, or equipment malfunctions, can be tolerated if the pressures are not excessive. Always use the correct fitting size to avoid damaging your system.
